How Long Does It Take to Pack up a House?
If you’re thinking about moving or changing properties, then you may be wondering how long it takes to pack up a house. You might also be wondering how long it will take for movers to load your belongings into their truck, especially if they’re quoting you by the hour.
The truth is, there’s no simple answer to either of these questions. There are many factors which can affect the time it takes to complete the moving process. How much you own, property size, and the distance from your old house to your new will all come into play.
Based on the size of your home, you can get a good idea of how long the moving process will take. This article assumes that you’ll be using professional movers, which will make things run more smoothly and efficiently, and will result in a faster move.
Consider the Size of Your Property
For a House
|Number of rooms in your house||Time it will take professional movers to pack|
|3-bedroom house||6 – 10 hours|
|4-bedroom house||8 – 12 hours|
|5-bedroom house||10 – 12 hours|
For an Apartment
|Number of rooms in your apartment||Time it will take professional movers to pack|
|1-bedroom||2 – 4 hours|
|2-bedroom||3 – 5 hours|
If you are taking on the packing and moving yourself, the time can take much longer. Without the help of a professional moving crew you may need to plan at least one full day for a one-bedroom apartment, and up to seven days for a five-bedroom house.
Factors That Can Influence the Time It Takes for You to Move
The number of belongings you have, property size, and distance have already been mentioned, but it’s worth taking note of other aspects that may add to your moving time.
- Condition, type and number of moving boxes on hand.
- Fragile or specialized items that may require extra attention during packing, loading and transportation.
- How much furniture needs to be assembled/disassembled for the move.
- Traffic in the city on the day of your move.
- The floor you’re living on, if moving to/from an apartment or condo.
- If it’s a busy time of the month/week, it could result in delays for the moving team.
- The number of movers you’ve hired to do the job.
How Long Does It Take Movers to Load a Truck?
The truck is just as important as the packing, and there are a few things that can determine how long loading your truck will take.
If your truck is less that 50ft. away from your ground or first floor apartment and your boxes and furniture are ready to go, then it may take an hour for two professional movers to load a 10’ truck; four hours for a 24’ truck; and 4.5 hours for a 26’ truck.
Of course, if you’re in an apartment that’s not on the ground level then you’ll need to wait for the moving elevator or plan for trips up and down stairs. Add 20% of the time mentioned for a ground floor move, for each floor above ground level, and 20% time for each 50ft increase in distance from your apartment to the truck.
